Sutter Delta - IndexSutter Delta - spring2008magazine - IndexSutter Delta responded to the community’s need with newly expanded
urological services. “I was intrigued by the vision of Sutter Delta and by
CEO Gary Rapaport’s commitment to urology,” says Dr. Sen. This is no
small statement coming from an experienced and well-published urologist
who worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; served as director of
urology and medical director of the surgery department at Mercy Hospital
in Minneapolis; and was the head of his own practice, which worked with
Twin Cities Regional Hospital, also in Minneapolis. “This move to bolster
the urology services here shows a lasting commitment and an opportunity
to build something special that will make a permanent difference in this
com munity,” Dr. Sen says. “I’m excited to also provide inpatient hospital
care at Sutter Delta, because sometimes patients who are being treated for
another condition may develop a urological emergency, and now I am here
to help provide that care close to home.”
A Shared Philosophy
Drs. Chin and Sen had not previously worked together, but after being
paired by Sutter Delta, Dr. Chin says they have a similar philosophy to
patient care. “It’s almost a boutique approach, where doctors know every
patient by name, administration knows who patients are, and everyone is
on the same page with the same focus: providing first-class, high-quality
health care,” says Dr. Chin.
What makes this team of doctors unique is that Dr. Chin is familiar
with this area. He is from Lafayette, went to Acalanes High School and is
excited to be practicing close to home. Dr. Chin attended Amherst College
in Massachusetts, then Harvard Medical School, and was part of a joint
health sciences and technology program with Harvard University and
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “It’s very rare that you get a chance
to build something from scratch,” Dr. Chin says. “This area is in desperate
need of a great urology department, and it’s really a win-win for everyone.”
Committed to Fighting Prostate Cancer
Besides their qualifications, there is even more that puts these two specialists
in a unique category. That is their commitment and approach to what
is becoming the male counterpart to breast cancer: prostate cancer. Dr. Sen
says that new statistics show that one in six men will be diagnosed with
prostate cancer in his lifetime—and that when men get the appropriate
treatment and find the cancer early, it is treatable.
Both Drs. Chin and Sen have spent much of their careers researching the
genetic markers of prostate cancer, looking into the male body to possibly
find a way of determining who is more at risk and why. Dr. Sen says the
biggest misconception regarding prostate cancer is that it’s an older man’s
disease. But he sees many patients develop the disease in their early-
to mid-40s. “Early detection is the key, followed by multiple treatment
options, all of which will soon be available to those who live in this community,”
he says.
Drs. Chin and Sen are working with the Sutter Delta administration to
begin a local campaign to raise prostate cancer awareness. “The fact that
this hospital is behind our efforts and believes in this cause is a good indicator
that we made the right decision to come here and that Sutter Delta is
in this for the long haul,” says Dr. Sen.
